Carried by Continental troops, the Grand Union, is considered the first true US Flag, and sanctioned by General George Washington. It borrowed the British King's Colors for its upper L corner (the "canton"), the body; 13 red & white stripes representing the Colonies. Washington had the Grand Union first raised on Prospect Hill in Somerville, Mass., on New Year's Day 1776, for the inauguration of the Continental Army.
